It was recently reported that the State of New York and the City of New York will be prioritizing distributing the coronavirus vaccine to minorities over whites. I believe it is racist to prioritize medicine by the race of a person unless the person’s race is a contributing factor in the medical condition.

The CDC does not list race as a risk factor when contracting COVID-19. It list plenty of other things, including conditions that the elderly tend to suffer from as a greater proportion of their population. The priority should be health care workers exposed to COVID patients on a regular basis and elderly people 65+ years of age. If states cannot distribute the vaccine fairly and without an agenda, deliveries of the vaccine to those states should be suspended.

Politicians in NYC and NYS are forced to pursue more aggressive lockdown protocols because the health care system has not been properly funded in our areas for a long time. The underfunding of health care hits poorer neighborhoods harder because health problems accumulate in communities with less disposable income. In our city, that is where a larger number of minorities are represented. In upstate NY, most of those folks affected by poor health care are white. 

If elected as a US senator, I will make practices like this illegal. Medicine should never be prioritized by race unless race is a risk factor and the risk factor should not be created by shortages in government services.
