1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (196 sites): Palmer Report: Welcome to our Orwellian nightmare

PR193: Our Orwellian predicamentWhat better day than today to memorialize George Orwell’s dystopian novel “1984,” a work that began its story on the fictional future date of April the fourth of that eponymous year? The novel’s protagonist, Winston Smith, is captured and brutally tortured for, among other things, “crimethink,” the entertaining of private thoughts deemed inimical to the state.

Before being ultimately broken and rendered wretchedly subservient in room 101, the place wherein lies everyone’s greatest personal terror, Winston Smith is asked by his tormentor, O’Brien, why does Big Brother, and hence the government, seek power? “You are ruling over us for our own good,” Winston meekly responds. For that Winston is treated to a back-archingly brutal jolt of electricity. “That was stupid, Winston, stupid!” O’Brien replies. “You should know better than to say a thing like that.” O’Brien goes on to explain it to him. “No one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it. Power is not a means, it is an end.”

It seems to me this is the best answer to why the Republican Party in general and Donald Trump in particular do what they so outrageously do, day in and day out. I submit this fictional theory of Orwell’s goes a long way in accounting for the pervasive mystery of the two years prior to the Blue Wave, when Trump and party virtually owned the government – yet did virtually nothing with that ownership. What little that did happen, the raping of the average taxpayer with the tax scam, the fast track installation of two eerily unqualified Supreme Court justices, put more money in the pockets of their cronies and paymasters in the first instance and shored up their prospects for keeping that money in the second.

The promised sweeping reforms for Jane and Joe Citizen, including the latest promise that a world-beating healthcare package that is so good you won’t believe it, are just around the corner. After the 2020 elections, of course. Vote us back in, they say, and you’ll see. Just don’t get sick in the meantime.

The Republican machine is using Donald Trump, toward this end, to consolidate their power against the day when they can freely abandon their hypocrisy and cease pretending they exist for the good of the people at all. Orwell gives us a cautionary tale of what might very well one day happen to America unless we stop them. “If you want a picture of the future,” O’Brien tells Winston Smith, “imagine a boot stamping on a human face – for ever.”

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (196 sites): Just Security: Beyond Sanctioning Elusive War Criminals, Prosecute the Profiteers

Bidibidi is the world’s second-largest refugee camp. A sea of tents and huts spilling into Uganda from its northern border, the settlement now hosts more than a quarter million South Sudanese seeking safety from a range of horrors in their country, including routine electrocution in torture camps and rape by government soldiers. Last summer, militias perpetrated gender-based violence “on a massive scale” in Unity State, the pride of South Sudan’s oil barons. This is where industry and militarization meet, with government militias paid in revenues reaped from petrol extraction, and repressive tactics surging in service of control over lucrative land.Survivors of these crimes, along with concerned members of the international community, are searching for justice. The barriers are many, including both an utter lack of will by the South Sudanese government, a co-opted, gutted judicial system, and weakened regional and international systems. For those affected, and for those who care, there has been nowhere to turn to hold the perpetrators of atrocities directly accountable in a court of law.

But an innovative legal strategy being tried by a few advocacy groups and prosecutors holds new promise. In short: Follow the money.

Financial sanctions have long been a critical intervention. But teams that investigate and prosecute the world’s most serious crimes in court are largely ignoring the financial dimensions. In so doing, they’re missing valuable testimony, documentary evidence, and a deeper understanding of criminal networks. As a result, we rarely see executives and corporate entities face consequences in courtrooms, despite their crucial roles in modern armed conflict and atrocities.

In February, a United Nations commission on South Sudan warned, “Impunity is…deeply entrenched in South Sudan’s political culture and legal systems, effectively placing government forces and officials and their allied forces above the law.” Absent the possibility of domestic prosecutions, the next options such as international courts are also non-starters. The government of South Sudan has not agreed to participate in the most obvious venue of recourse, the International Criminal Court. And while the 2018 peace agreement includes commitments to establish a specialized hybrid court of international and South Sudanese jurists, the government has blocked any meaningful follow-through,  and the African Union, which has the authority to step in, also has opted out.

From South Sudan to Syria to Myanmar, it has become clear the world lacks adequate mechanisms to prosecute state actors for extreme violence against their own citizens. But state-sponsored mass atrocities are often driven by greed and massive profiteering. Probing the financial dimensions of the world’s deadliest armed conflicts could lead to unexplored avenues for war crimes prosecutions, and improve the credibility of justice efforts overall.

Crimes like forced disappearance and sexual violence may seem detached from illicit finance streams and commercial interests, but they can be part of complex strategies supported by corporate networks. Reporting on one of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s most dangerous armed groups, a U.N. agency said in 2016, “The FDLR have structured a dense and diversified economic web, which in return shapes their military activities.” Another example came in June 2018: French authorities indicted the cement company La Farge on evidence of its complicity in the self-styled Islamic State’s brutalities in Syria.

Violent actors rely on business networks, financing, and equipment to inflict harm on a large scale. In turn, brokers, extractives companies, banks, arms dealers, and shell companies stand to earn millions by facilitating violent strategies on resource-rich land.

More Bloody, Costly, and Intractable Wars

With widespread impunity, many of the most powerful co-conspirators and facilitators of atrocities continue operating quite profitably. And their roles are far from negligible. As scholar James G. Stewart has put it, “As a consequence of the illegal trade in minerals, metals, timber, and natural resources, armed conflicts in which participants are able to draw upon easily accessible natural resource wealth are often more bloody, financially costly, and intractable than other forms of armed violence.”

These dirty money dynamics are often quite clear to those directly impacted. Last summer, a man forced to flee South Sudan spoke to me at a hotel bar in a neighboring capital city. He held a position close enough to power that he met me in secret and could not reveal his identity for this piece. I asked about the objectives of the war. “Frustrate these people,” he said, referring to South Sudanese seeking refuge from attacks in their communities. “Let them leave.”

He paused, his gaze training on the ice in his glass. “And it worked.” Indeed, the refugee flow from South Sudan to bordering countries is one of the fastest-growing in the world. Many are leaving areas endowed with lucrative timber, oil, and strategic trafficking routes. The government’s end goal? I asked. He tipped his eyes up to look at me directly. “They’re rich now.”

Network sanctions and anti-money laundering measures, deployed to create consequences for abusive regimes, are crucial responses to this dynamic. Much more could be done on that front.

But in addition, targeting financial accomplices and illicit cash flows directly through courts could have a transformative impact on the drive for justice. Prosecutors could map corporate profiles of army commanders, investigate complicit executives operating abroad, and seize criminally derived assets.

The ICC, the new hybrid court emerging in the Central African Republic, and war crimes units in the U.S. and Europe have the tools to do this integration, but they’re leaving those innovations on the table. To be sure, investigating and prosecuting war crimes is complex and challenging enough without adding this extra dimension. The stakes are high, and the money for training and expertise is tight. But financial motivations, impacts, and actors are a crucial part of the perpetration of war crimes. Incorporating mechanisms to probe them could produce a fuller picture of how atrocity crimes are executed, illuminate vital documentary evidence, and generate funds with asset seizures to pay for much-needed reparations.

Multiplying Jurisdictions

Moreover, financial investigations could have a multiplier effect on the number of potential jurisdictions with the authority to prosecute. Case in point: When the rebel group Nationalist and Integrationist Front committed atrocities during Congo’s second civil war, they were running a lucrative gold cartel out of one of the country’s largest mining areas. The direct perpetrators were never prosecuted for their crimes, but diligent investigations into the gold supply chains, who profited, and where the money wound up, revealed six different countries with authority to investigate, including the U.K.

Authorities in every government concerned with ending the world’s worst humanitarian crises should take a closer look at the commercial actors in their backyards. Many countries providing perpetrators a financial safe haven have war crimes and transnational crimes units. With the right resources, those specialized teams can investigate and pursue the financial facilitators and impacts of ongoing atrocity crimes. Domestic and international courts can seize criminally derived assets in the course of both criminal and civil trials, and that money should furnish reparations programs designed by survivors and their communities.

War is a moneyed place, and greed is often the fuel and incentive behind the world’s most horrific war crimes. Accepting that fact, acting on it, could be pivotal for the pursuit of justice. Without such a shift, some of the most powerful engines of violence will continue operating, and victims and survivors will almost certainly remain without adequate reparations – a perversion given the exorbitant wealth the facilitators and profiteers have stashed away.

Just last month, South Sudan’s oil minister heralded new international interest in the country’s black gold, promising to bring development “back to pre-war levels.” These announcements are alarming, given mounting links between oil and mass atrocities and a sense that for South Sudan’s government, business ambition and militarization are corollaries. Each new effort to probe those links will add volume to a crucial global message: no matter where they operate, war crimes profiteers will be held accountable. That warning is currently a murmur.

This article is based on a new report by the author published at The Sentry“Prosecute the Profiteers: Following the Money to Support War Crimes Accountability.”

IMAGE: Children eat porridge, locally known as Uji, as the WFP, The ‘World Food Programme’ distribute hot meals at the Imvepi Settlement in February 2017 in Arua District, Uganda, as a famine had just been declared in South Sudan. The famine was likely to increase the flow of refugees from the war in South Sudan into Uganda, which already had reached 1.5 million by then and was putting pressure on the ability of humanitarian aid providers to cope with the crisis, including in settlements like Imvepi and Bidibidi. M.N.: This is a very important story. It confirms my impressions, formed earlier, that the Orthodox Judaism in general, and its various offshoots , such as “Chabad Lubavitch” and other “Hasidic movements“, just like the State of Israel itself (God bless it), are nothing less and nothing more than the creations of the Abwehr and the New Abwehr (after WW2), which themselves were and are predominantly half or part Jewish, especially in their “top heavy” leadership circles, including Canaris himself and most of his commanding officers, as exemplified by this particular one described in this article

It was a historically formed and a historically determined circumstance: the ethnically German junkers looked down upon the Intelligence work which, as they felt, was not compatible with their ideal of the “honest military service”, and they gladly or by necessity gave this area to the Jews and part Jews to manage. Another half of this formula might have been in the objective military observations that the smart, creative, ambitious, and quite German-wise patriotic Jews were simply much better and more efficient in this area, and they accepted and practiced this observation as the rule of their science and arts of wars and espionage.

For the half and part Jewish Abwehr officers this “half and half” became their ideal and their elaborate “philosophy“: the fusion of the Germanic and the Hebrew Spirits and their best embodiment and representations (in the high Abwehr officers, of course).

It also included the criteria for the personnel selection; most of the Abwehr high officers do LOOK half or part Jewish

This point is very important for the understanding of the Abwehr’s and the New Abwehr’s psychology, outlook, and the nature, the character, and the distinguishing, the “diagnostic” features of their operations

The New Abwehr apparently, influences and manipulates the Orthodox Judaic movements, especially their pet project, the “Chabad Lubavitch” and other “Hasidic movements” quite heavily and almost absolutely invisibly, masking and advertising their “Putin connection” as the quite efficient, convenient, and convincing cover.

These issues need the sophisticated and in-depth research.

With regard to Trump Investigations, this assumption, or the working hypothesis, as described above, has the direct bearing and is a factor in understanding the Sphinx The Regent Jared Kushner, his family, their origins, and the origins of their wealth

The so called “Bielski Partisans” absolutely could not exist, function, and survive (quite nicely, with the trainloads of the robbed Nazi Gold and jewelry, which they later invested in the US real estate and other successful business ventures-rackets) without the overt or tacit approval and consent from the Abwehr which controlled everything on the occupied territories

The Trump Crime Family was the long term Abwehr assets, starting from Frederich Trump, Donald’s grandfather, who run the bordellos for them, and including Fred Trump, Donald’s father who built the “economy” housing for the newly arrived Abwehr agents, mixed into the mass of the legitimate refugees, and who also became the money launderer and the money manager for the Abwehr and the New Abwehr

Recently they (the New Abwehr planners) decided to merge these two families into a singleTrump-Kushner Crime Family, in what was clearly the arranged marriage between Jared and Ivanka, in preparation and as the first step towards Operation Trump. It was helped, as the apparent second step in this arrangement, by Wendi Deng the “Chinese spy”, as alleged and circulated by Rupert Murdoch, her husband at the time. Both of them, just as, hypothetically, the FOX News Corporation were (and are?) heavily influenced by the New Abwehr. For Murdoch this proclivity apparently also runs in a family.  This is the apparent pattern of this prudent way of family recruitment; universally, and for the Abwehr in particular.

This aspect is also important for the understanding of the role that Felix Sater and his “Chabad” sect played in the “Trump – Russia Affair“.

This thesis about the connection between the Orthodox Judaism and Abwehr is also consistent with the “Abwehr Diagnostic Triad” which was formulated by me earlier, as consisting of:
  1) Judeophobia (as the psychological product of these described above circumstances: the Abwehr half Jews were the GOOD (half) JEWS, all the rest were “very bad, sick, and contaminating” Jews),

2) Homophobia (the so called “Internalized Homophobia“, stemming from the personal aspects of the Abwehr leadership and reflecting the general, very permissive attitude towards homosexuality among the German military circles before and especially in the aftermath of the WW1), and

3) the specific Austrophobia or the so called Anti-Austrian sentiment (distrust and hate of all things Austrian), which stems from the Austro – Prussian War of 1866 and from the Austria–Prussia rivalry.

In the “Trump Affair”, the Austrophobia aspect is expressed by the New Abwehr planners in the concept of the “decadent and dishonest, not to be trusted”, part Jewish, Hapsburg Group, and this circumstance can be viewed as the particularly “telling”, or highly suggestive and indicative, “pathognomonic“, of the Abwehr operations.

Объявлены окончательные результаты первого тура выборов президента Украины: Украина: Бывший СССР: Lenta.ru

Some on Mueller’s Team Say Report Was More Damaging Than Barr Revealed

WASHINGTON — Some of Robert S. Mueller III’s investigators have told associates that Attorney General William P. Barr failed to adequately portray the findings of their inquiry and that they were more troubling for President Trump than Mr. Barr indicated, according to government officials and others familiar with their simmering frustrations.

At stake in the dispute — the first evidence of tension between Mr. Barr and the special counsel’s office — is who shapes the public’s initial understanding of one of the most consequential government investigations in American history. Some members of Mr. Mueller’s team are concerned that, because Mr. Barr created the first narrative of the special counsel’s findings, Americans’ views will have hardened before the investigation’s conclusions become public.

Mr. Barr has said he will move quickly to release the nearly 400-page report but needs time to scrub out confidential information. The special counsel’s investigators had already written multiple summaries of the report, and some team members believe that Mr. Barr should have included more of their material in the four-page letter he wrote on March 24 laying out their main conclusions, according to government officials familiar with the investigation. Mr. Barr only briefly cited the special counsel’s work in his letter.

However, the special counsel’s office never asked Mr. Barr to release the summaries soon after he received the report, a person familiar with the investigation said. And the Justice Department quickly determined that the summaries contain sensitive information, like classified material, secret grand-jury testimony and information related to current federal investigations that must remain confidential, according to two government officials.

Mr. Barr was also wary of departing from Justice Department practice not to disclose derogatory details in closing an investigation, according to two government officials familiar with Mr. Barr’s thinking. They pointed to the decision by James B. Comey, the former F.B.I. director, to harshly criticize Hillary Clinton in 2016 while announcing that he was recommending no charges in the inquiry into her email practices.

The officials and others interviewed declined to flesh out why some of the special counsel’s investigators viewed their findings as potentially more damaging for the president than Mr. Barr explained, although the report is believed to examine Mr. Trump’s efforts to thwart the investigation. It was unclear how much discussion Mr. Mueller and his investigators had with senior Justice Department officials about how their findings would be made public. It was also unclear how widespread the vexation is among the special counsel team, which included 19 lawyers, about 40 F.B.I. agents and other personnel.

At the same time, Mr. Barr and his advisers have expressed their own frustrations about Mr. Mueller and his team. Mr. Barr and other Justice Department officials believe the special counsel’s investigators fell short of their task by declining to decide whether Mr. Trump illegally obstructed the inquiry, according to the two government officials. After Mr. Mueller made no judgment on the obstruction matter, Mr. Barr stepped in to declare that he himself had cleared Mr. Trump of wrongdoing.

Representatives for the Justice Department and the special counsel declined to comment on Wednesday on views inside both Mr. Mueller’s office and the Justice Department. They pointed to departmental regulations requiring Mr. Mueller to file a confidential report to the attorney general detailing prosecution decisions and to Mr. Barr’s separate vow to send a redacted version of that report to Congress. Under the regulations, Mr. Barr can publicly release as much of the document as he deems appropriate.

A debate over how the special counsel’s conclusions are represented has played out in public as well as in recent weeks, with Democrats in Congress accusing Mr. Barr of intervening to color the outcome of the investigation in the president’s favor.

In his letter to Congress outlining the report’s chief conclusions, Mr. Barr said that Mr. Mueller found no conspiracy between Mr. Trump’s campaign and Russia’s 2016 election interference. While Mr. Mueller made no decision on his other main question, whether the president illegally obstructed the inquiry, he explicitly stopped short of exonerating Mr. Trump.

Mr. Mueller’s decision to skip a prosecutorial judgment “leaves it to the attorney general to determine whether the conduct described in the report constitutes a crime,” Mr. Barr wrote. He and his deputy, Rod J. Rosenstein, decided that the evidence was insufficient to conclude that Mr. Trump had committed an obstruction offense.

Mr. Barr has come under criticism for sharing so little. But according to officials familiar with the attorney general’s thinking, he and his aides limited the details they revealed because they were worried about wading into political territory. Mr. Barr and his advisers expressed concern that if they included derogatory information about Mr. Trump while clearing him, they would face a storm of criticism like what Mr. Comey endured in the Clinton investigation.

Legal experts attacked Mr. Comey at the time for violating Justice Department practice to keep confidential any negative information about anyone uncovered during investigations. The practice exists to keep from unfairly sullying people’s reputations without giving them a chance to respond in court.

Mr. Rosenstein cited the handling of the Clinton case in a memo the White House used to rationalize Mr. Trump’s firing of Mr. Comey.

Though it was not clear what findings the special counsel’s investigators viewed as troubling for the president, Mr. Barr has suggested that Mr. Mueller may have found evidence of malfeasance in investigating possible obstruction of justice. “The report sets out evidence on both sides of the question,” Mr. Barr wrote in his March 24 letter.

Mr. Mueller examined Mr. Trump’s attempts to maintain control over the investigation, including his firing of Mr. Comey and his attempt to oust Mr. Mueller and Attorney General Jeff Sessions to install a loyalist to oversee the inquiry.

The fallout from Mr. Barr’s letter outlining the Russia investigation’s main findings overshadowed his intent to make public as much of the entire report as possible, a goal he has stressed since his confirmation hearing in January. He reiterated to lawmakers on Friday that he wanted both Congress and the public to read the report and said that the department would by mid-April furnish a version with sensitive material blacked out. He offered to testify on Capitol Hill soon after turning over the report.

Mr. Barr, who took office in February, has shown flashes of frustration over how the unveiling of the investigation’s findings has unfolded. In his follow-up letter to lawmakers on Friday, he chafed at how the news media and some lawmakers had characterized his March 24 letter.

Mr. Barr and Mr. Mueller have been friends for 30 years, and Mr. Barr said during his confirmation hearing in January that he trusted Mr. Mueller to conduct an impartial investigation. He said he told Mr. Trump that Mr. Mueller was a “straight shooter who should be dealt with as such.” Mr. Mueller served as the head of the Justice Department’s criminal division when Mr. Barr was attorney general under George Bush, and their families are friends.

Mr. Barr’s promises of transparency have done little to appease Democrats who control the House. The House Judiciary Committee voted on Wednesday to let its chairman use a subpoena to try to compel Mr. Barr to hand over a full copy of the Mueller report and its underlying evidence to Congress. The chairman, Representative Jerrold Nadler, Democrat of New York, has not said when he will use the subpoena, but made clear on Wednesday that he did not trust Mr. Barr’s characterization of what Mr. Mueller’s team found.

“The Constitution charges Congress with holding the president accountable for alleged official misconduct,” Mr. Nadler said. “That job requires us to evaluate the evidence for ourselves — not the attorney general’s summary, not a substantially redacted synopsis, but the full report and the underlying evidence.”

Republicans, who have embraced Mr. Barr’s letter clearing Mr. Trump, have accused the Democrats of trying to prolong the cloud over his presidency and urged them to move on.

Mr. Trump has fully embraced Mr. Barr’s version of events. For days, he has pronounced the outcome of the investigation a “complete and total exoneration” and called for the Justice Department and his allies on Capitol Hill to investigate and hold accountable those responsible for opening the inquiry.

6:44 AM 4/4/2019 – Bernie Sanders as the Leader of the Worldwide Renewed Socialist Movement

The world’s left-wingers are feeling the Bern

“Bernie Sanders’ last campaign was part of the inspiration for the way in which Labour approached the 2017 general election,” Richard Burgon, the British Labour Party’s Shadow Justice Secretary, said. | Brendan Smialowski/AFP/Getty Images
Sanders is viewed abroad as a potential figurehead for a worldwide movement against right-wing populism.
Bernie Sanders has a base that no other 2020 candidate can claim: left-wing politicians around the globe.
From South America to Europe to the Middle East, leftist leaders are celebrating his candidacy, viewing him as an iconic democratic socialist with the potential to lead a worldwide progressive movement at a time when right-wing populism is on the rise across the map.
Story Continued Below
Their regard for Sanders burnishes the Vermont senator’s foreign policy bona fides at a time when he is trying to shake the reputation he received in 2016 as a lightweight on international affairs. But it also carries risks for an American politician who will need to broaden his appeal and insulate himself against attacks on his progressive ideals to win the White House.
“There is a danger to collecting maybe not endorsements, but positive reviews from far-left politicians around the world when American voters are still not quite sure about how they feel about democratic socialism,” said Jennifer Holdsworth, a former staffer for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 bid and the ex-campaign manager for Pete Buttigieg’s run for Democratic National Committee chairman. “And this is not just a Democratic primary conversation, this is also a general election conversation.”
Among Sanders’ admirers: Evo Morales, the socialist president of Bolivia who blasted the United States last year for committing the “most egregious acts of aggression committed during the 21st century.”
Morales congratulated Sanders recently on Twitter for launching a second bid for the White House: “We are confident this progressive leader will have a strong support from the people of the U.S. Democratic revolutions are built upon democratic elections.”
Not all of Sanders’ foreign fans are so controversial. Members of Parliament in the United Kingdom’s Labour Party have argued that Sanders and Jeremy Corbyn would have a “special relationship” if the two men both rose to the top of their countries.
“Over the moon that @BernieSanders is running for President in 2020,” wrote Laura Pidcock, Labour’s Shadow Minister for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, in a tweet after he announced his candidacy. “Bernie was never just a candidate, his campaign was a movement, galvanising millions & offering hope across the globe.”
Richard Burgon, the Labour Party’s Shadow Justice Secretary, confirmed that “the two teams” — Sanders’ and his party’s — “have talked.”
“Bernie Sanders’ last campaign was part of the inspiration for the way in which Labour approached the 2017 general election,” he said, “where we went to a very low position in the polls to being the biggest swing to the Labour Party in a general election since 1945.”
Steve Howell, a former Labour strategist, agreed that Sanders’ insurgent 2016 primary challenge influenced thinking within the Corbyn campaign.
“I was not alone among Corbyn’s supporters in reflecting on what Labour could learn from the Sanders campaign,” he wrote in 2018. “Not only was there considerable common ground on policy, they were both ‘anti-establishment’ politicians who had the authenticity and credibility, on the one hand, to counter the right-wing populism of Donald Trump and [Brexit leader] Nigel Farage and, on the other, to inspire and mobilise young people on a scale not seen for a generation.”
In Canada, Israel, Germany and Spain, progressive politicians have also hailed the Vermont senator on social media and in interviews, often speaking favorably of his Medicare-for-All proposal, non-interventionist foreign policy, and advocacy for the Green New Deal. Sometimes, the excitement is borderline giddy: Stefan Liebich, a Left member of the German Bundestag, recently posted a photo of himself on social media holding a Sanders figurine, adding, “#feelthebern.”
To both Sanders and his supporters around the world, it is impossible to fight climate change without international cooperation. To that end, a group called the “Progressive International” was announced at a convention last year held by the Sanders Institute, a think tank founded by the presidential contender’s wife and son.
Story Continued Below
The network of left-wing politicians and activists hopes to fight against “the global war being waged against workers, against our environment, against democracy, against decency,” according to its website.
Niki Ashton, a Canadian member of Parliament who joined Sanders in launching Progressive International, said the senator “has shifted the conversations both in the U.S. and around the world.”
In the eyes of progressives across the globe, left-wing populism is needed to take on right-wing authoritarians such as Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who recently met with President Trump.
“The far right have internationalised,” Ross Greer, a Green member of Scottish Parliament who went on the TV show “Scotland Tonight” to declare his support for Sanders, told POLITICO. “They cooperate and coordinate across borders, so if we are to defeat them, we need to do the same. Bernie gets that in a way I’ve not seen from any other presidential candidate.”
At a 2018 speech at Johns Hopkins University, which criticized the Trump administration’s relationship with Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and others, Sanders spoke of the need to stop the “growing worldwide movement toward authoritarianism.”
“All around the world, in Europe, in Russia, in the Middle East, in Asia, Latin America, and elsewhere we are seeing movements led by demagogues who exploit people’s fears, prejudices and grievances to gain and hold onto power,” he said. “We need to counter oligarchic authoritarianism with a strong global progressive movement that speaks to the needs of working people.”
Leftist leaders across the globe look back at the dynamics of Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign and its connection to the rise of right-wing populism and nationalism, and envision Sanders playing a similarly catalytic role on the left if he emerges as the Democratic nominee.
In the run-up to the 2016 election, Farage campaigned for Trump, and even joined him at a rally in Mississippi. Steve Bannon, Trump’s campaign chief executive at the time, avidly backed the UK’s efforts to withdraw from the European Union.
The embrace from left-wing politicians overseas, however, could pose a threat to a candidate who has been attacked in the past for expressing sympathy for leftist governments hostile to the United States, including Nicaragua and Cuba in the 1980s. More recently, Sanders’ reluctance to to call Venezuelan strongman Nicolas Maduro a dictator, or to recognize Juan Guaidó as the interim president of the country — the position adopted by the U.S. and a majority of Latin American countries and European countries — drew criticism even from within the Democratic Party
Sanders’ staffers downplay concerns that support from socialist politicians abroad will foster the impression that his views are out of the American mainstream — which is shaping up as a central GOP argument against Democratic candidates — arguing that Republicans will label any Democratic nominee as extreme.
Story Continued Below
“They’re always going to do that, no matter who the candidate is, because they don’t want to have a debate about how Americans deserve health care,” said Matt Duss, Sanders’ foreign policy adviser. “They don’t want to have a debate about making sure prosperity is broadly shared.”
Within the Democratic primary field, the issue is perhaps less relevant: Close to six-in-10 Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents have a positive view of socialism, according to a Gallup poll last year, and, unlike in past years, Democrats now have a more positive image of socialism than they do of capitalism.
And at a time of strained American relationships abroad, Holdsworth said, “Another world leader praising an American elected official is a good thing in the age of Trump.”
What’s clear is that Sanders’ fate will be closely watched beyond U.S. borders, where many on the left see his campaign as testing the American appetite for left-wing policies and a global progressive movement in a way that no other Democratic candidate does.
“Bernie Sanders is very exciting as part of an international movement against neoliberal economic inequality,” said Burgon. “Given that he’s gained so much appeal in the United States … where that’s a place where these progressive ideas would find it hard to get a following through the political mainstream, I think people in the UK and around the world have found that particularly inspiring.”

2020 elections

Sanders is viewed abroad as a potential figurehead for a worldwide movement against right-wing populism.

By HOLLY OTTERBEIN

3:41 AM 4/4/2019 – My preliminary impressions of Donald Trump’s psychiatric problems, in one paragraph: Learning Disability and Depression – M.N.

M.N.: My preliminary impressions of Donald Trump’s psychiatric problems, in one paragraph:

Donald Trump was and is learning disabled, dyslexic, this might explain his spelling difficulties and the repetitive phrases (the term is “Palilalia“).  He was born this way, and his family tried to hide this. This “explains” the peculiarities of his thinking and behavior. He does not understand this world (who does?), and tries to survive in it (nicely). He fits this syndrome, and the bullishness comes with it: he perceives the world as hostile and potentially aggressive (isn’t it?). However, in and by itself this “learning disability” does not automatically imply the cognitive and intellectual deficits, and it should not really interfere with his duties as President. Donald appears to be quite depressed, irritable, irascible, angry, enraged, “MAD”, and he has good and various reasons to be depressed and “mad”.
None of his “psychiatric problems” explain away or justify his political and legal problems, these are the different “universes”. Donald can be considered our first learning disabled President.
To summarize: there is a subtle organic component in Donald Trump’s speech patterns, thinking, and behavior which is consistent with the certain features of the Learning Disability Syndrome, but they should not interfere with his overall capacity to discharge his duties as the President.

“Origins”: “There are plenty of people who randomly misspeak from time to time, whether it be mangling a word, or flubbing a basic fact. It doesn’t mean something is wrong with them. But yesterday Donald Trump twice tried to say the word “origins” and instead said “oranges” both times. Then, clearly aware that he was unable to say the word “origins,” he tried to clarify that he meant “beginnings.” Then he managed to correctly say “origin,” the singular form of the word. Then he tried again to say the plural form “origins” but it came out “oranges” a third time. Then Trump claimed that his father was born in Germany, when his father was born in New York City.”

Nazi Germany Never Happens: Meet the Man Who Could Have Killed Hitler

WarIsBoring

Security,

Henry Tandey regretted not pulling the trigger during World War I

On Sept. 28, 1918 on a battlefield in France, a wounded German soldier shuffled right into the line of fire of a British soldier named Henry Tandey.

Tandey raised his rifle. But when he understood the German was hurt and could not fight back, Tandey lowered his weapon.

The German soldier realized he was in the crosshairs. He nodded thanks to his potential slayer—then scurried away.

The German soldier was Adolf Hitler, then 29 years old.

In 1938, British prime minister Neville Chamberlain visited Hitler in Germany to sign the Munich Agreement, conceding parts of Czechoslovakia to Germany—the first appeasement on the path to global war.

During the meeting, Chamberlain noticed a reproduction of the painting Menin Crossroads by Italian artist Fortunio Matania, depicted here. The painting shows a British soldier carrying a wounded man across his back.

The soldier is Tandey.

Tandey’s unit, the Green Howards, had given the painting to the German Führer. Hitler told Chamberlain the man in the painting had spared his life. “That man came so close to killing me in 1918 that I thought I should never see Germany again,” Hitler said.

The Führer asked Chamberlain to thank Tandey on his behalf. Chamberlain placed a call to London and ended up speaking to Tandey’s nephew.

Filled with regret, in 1940 Tandey told the Sunday Graphic he wished he could go back in time. “If only I had known what he would turn out to be,” Tandey said of Hitler. “When I saw all the people, women and children he had killed and wounded, I was sorry to God I let him go.”

“I’d give 10 years now to have five minutes of clairvoyance then,” Tandey added. One of the Commonwealth’s most highly-decorated soldiers, he tried to re-enlist at the age 49. But his failing health barred him from further military service.

“Britain’s most decorated private soldier sparing the life of Adolf Hitler makes a great story,” David Johnson wrote in his book The Man Who Didn’t Shoot Hitler“But for Henry Tandey to be known more for his alleged compassion towards Hitler than for his undoubted bravery seemed to me to do him a disservice.”

Tandey died in 1977.
