German Intelligence Knew ‘Novichok’ Nerve Agent Composition in 1990s – Reports
EuropeGet short URL
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – German intelligence gained a sample of the so-called “Novichok” nerve agent and determined its chemical composition back in the 1990s, local media reported on Wednesday. An investigation, carried out by several major German media and published by the Zeit newspaper, revealed that over 20 years ago, the German federal intelligence service Bundesnachrichtendienst had managed to obtain a sample of the poison from a defector recruited by the intelligence. The outlet emphasized that the decision-makers in this operation confirmed this information. The sample was reportedly transported to a laboratory in Sweden for analysis. However, the intelligence service and the German army were only provided with the chemical composition of the substance subsequently. The Swedish government was unable to comment on the information, the publication added. © AP Photo / Andrew Matthews/PA Germany subsequently shared the characteristics of the substance with its allies, the investigation revealed. Some of these NATO members began producing small quantities of the nerve agent. The German government refused to comment on the results of the investigation, the outlet pointed out. The issue of production of the so-called “Novichok-class” nerve agents has been high-profile since March, when Russian ex-spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter were allegedly poisoned with the use of what London called A234 “Novichok” substance in the UK city of Salisbury. The United Kingdom accused Russia of being behind the attack. Moscow denied the accusations and pointed to the lack of proof of its involvement in the case. Moreover, Russia said that the chemical composition of the nerve agent has been known to many since it has been circulating in the media for years. |

West’s knowledge of Novichok came from sample secured in 1990s: report
BERLIN (Reuters) – The West’s knowledge of the secret Russian nerve agent that Britain says was used to poison an ex-spy and his daughter came from a sample obtained by Germany in the 1990s, German media reported on Wednesday. In a joint report, German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung, the weekly Die Zeit and broadcasters NDR and WDR said Germany’s BND spy agency had secured the sample of the Novichok nerve agent from a Russian scientist. The sample was analyzed in Sweden and the chemical formula was given to the German government and military, the report cited sources as saying. Western countries used the information to help develop countermeasures. The story could help shed light on how Britain was able to analyze the poison it says was used to attack former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in England in March. Britain has blamed Russia for the poisoning. More than 20 Western countries have shown their support for London by expelling Russian diplomats over the affair, the biggest expulsion since the Cold War. Moscow has denied blame and says London has not been forthcoming about how it investigated the poison. “The finding about a class of weapons known as Novichok developed in the former Soviet Union largely stems from a previously unknown secret operation of the BND,” a summary of the German news organization’s’ joint report said. It said it was unclear what had become of the sample, and said the Swedish government had said it could not provide information about the process on short notice. A spokesman for the German defense ministry said the German military researched how to protect against chemical, biological, radioactive and nuclear weapons materials, in accordance with international law, but could not provide details so as to safeguard members of the military and the German population. “This includes the question about which substances are being researched and the availability of these materials,” a ministry spokesman said. “As a result, statements and assertions about this are not confirmed, denied or commented on.” The BND also declined to comment on the report. The German media report said the BND had informed the U.S. and British intelligence agencies about the case following the analysis, and small amounts of the poison were later produced in several NATO member states to test Western protective gear, testing equipment and antidotes. Mr Skripal remains in hospital in Salisbury, where his condition is said to be improving and he is no longer in a critical condition. His daughter was discharged last month and is recovering at an undisclosed location. Investigators are yet to identify who carried out the poisoning, the national security adviser told MPs earlier this month. |

Photo At Russian Military Academy Adds To Evidence About Skripal Poisoning Suspect
A photograph on display at a Russian military academy is adding to the growing evidence identifying a Russian military intelligence officer who was allegedly involved in the poisoning of a former double agent in England. The photo, highlighted in an October 2 report published jointly by RFE/RL’s Russian Service and the open-source investigative website Bellingcat, builds on other recent reports that have used data from passport registries, online photographs, and military records to focus on a Russian man identified by British authorities as Ruslan Boshirov. British authorities say that Boshirov and another man identified as Aleksandr Petrov were behind the March poisoning of Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, in the English town of Salisbury in March. The Skripals survived the poisoning, which used a Soviet-made military nerve agent known as Novichok. Days after being publicly identified, the two Russians went on state-controlled TV channel RT and claimed they were merely tourists. The Kremlin has strenuously denied any involvement in the poisoning, which prompted London, Washington, and other Western allies to expel dozens of Russian diplomats. Passport information and other data compiled by Bellingcat, however, revealed that the two suspects had links to Russian military intelligence, known as the GRU. Later research pinpointed Boshirov’s alleged true identity as Anatoly Chepiga, who graduated from the Far Eastern Military Academy and received a medal — the Hero of the Russia Federation — in 2014, and holds the rank of colonel in the GRU. Several people from Chepiga’s hometown also corroborated his identity to Russian and Western media, and confirmed he had been awarded a medal. Using social-media postings, RFE/RL’s Russian Service, along with Bellingcat, discovered a wall of photos at the military academy honoring famous graduates. One of the photos, posted between July 2014 and March 2016, is identified as Chepiga. The photo shows a man resembling the man identified as Boshirov on the RT interview. Bellingcat also obtained a higher-resolution version of the Chepiga photograph on the wall, showing a close resemblance to the man who was interviewed on RT. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has asserted that the allegations about Chepiga and the other man are part of an “information campaign” aimed at Russia. In June, two other British citizens were also exposed to the nerve agent, apparently by accident; one of them, Dawn Sturgess, died. With reporting by RFE/RL’s Russian Service and Bellingcat
