Hot air balloon hits pylon in Germany, with six rescued

mikenova shared this story from BBC News – Home.

A hot air balloon became tangled in an electricity pylon in western Germany, firefighters have said, stranding six passengers 65m (213ft) above ground.

The balloon became caught at about 17:30 local time (15:30 GMT) on Sunday, authorities in the city of Bottrop said.

Passengers were individually abseiled to safety in a six-hour operation, and all were taken to hospital as a precaution.

The cause of the crash is not known.

The balloon struck the top of the pylon on Essener Street in the south of the city, a local fire brigade press release said.

Firefighters called up to the passengers by megaphone, before they managed to get in touch by phone.

Only the balloon itself hit the wires, rather than the basket – protecting all aboard from the electricity.

Power to the pylon was shut off as firefighters climbed the mast and secured the basket.

Each passenger was then rappelled down one by one.

Nobody was hurt in the crash, although two suffered slight shock.

Work got underway on Monday to remove the balloon from the wires, while authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.

German far-right terror suspects detained in overnight raids | Germany| News and in-depth reporting from Berlin and beyond | DW

Some 100 police officers raided several properties in the German states of Saxony and Bavaria early on Monday morning as part of an investigation into a far-right terror group called “Revolution Chemnitz,” named after the eastern German city that was the scene of recent far-right demonstrations following the killing of a German man allegedly by migrants.

The six men arrested, aged between 20 and 30, are suspected of forming a terrorist organization under the leadership of 31-year-old Christian K., who had already been arrested on September 14.

According to Germany’s state prosecutors, the men were planning attacks on “foreigners” and people who did not share their political views. Batons, an air-rifle, and computer hard drives were seized during the raids.

Terrorist investigation

Investigators said the group had tried to acquire semi-automatic firearms, and on September 14 five of the seven suspects, including Christian K., had taken part in a coordinated attack on foreigners in Chemnitz using glass bottles, weighted knuckle gloves, and an electroshock weapon. One man was injured during the incident, which resulted in a number of arrests.

Investigators said there was evidence this had been a “practice run” for a larger attack planned for October 3, a national holiday celebrating Germany’s reunification.

Demonstrators with German flags (picture-alliance/dpa)Chemnitz was the scene of several neo-Nazi demos in late August

The prosecutors’ statement said the six men were all members of the “hooligan, skinhead, and neo-Nazi scene” in the Chemnitz area, and all considered themselves leading members of the far-right scene in Saxony. Prosecutors believe the group’s aim was “the overthrow of the democratic rule of law” based on their right-wing extremist ideology.

All seven men are due to be arraigned in a federal court on Monday and Tuesday. A spokeswoman for the federal prosecutors, Frauke Köhler, said on Monday that they would be joining forces with Saxony counterparts to investigate “far-right structures” in the state.

Köhler said prosecutors had decided to upgrade the investigation from a criminal to a terrorist one after assessing the group’s internal communications, which showed they had been planning attacks and working to acquire weapons.

Chemnitz demos

The eastern German city of Chemnitz was the scene of several confrontations in late August and early September, after a German-Cuban man died from stab wounds following a fight with two asylum-seekers from Syria and Iraq. The Iraqi suspect was later released.

The death triggered a week of occasionally violent far-right demos and counter-demos, culminating in an anti-racism rock concert that drew a crowd of over 60,000 people. Köhler said the investigators had not yet established whether the suspects were involved in the far-right demos in Chemnitz.

The events have reignited tensions in Germany over the influx of refugees three years ago, with violence involving migrants attracting massive media attention and subsequent political fall-out: the head of Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, Hans-Georg Maassen, lost his job after publicly questioning the authenticity of videos showing migrants being attacked in Chemnitz.

Germany’s failure to address the threat of neo-Nazi violence was brought into sharp relief earlier this year with the end of the five-year trial of Beate Zschäpe, a member of the National Socialist Underground (NSU), a neo-Nazi cell that murdered at least ten people over an eight-year period in the 2000s. Zschäpe was sentenced to life in prison in July.

The NSU remained undetected largely because of systemic investigation failures by German police and intelligence agencies.

On Monday, German Justice Minister Katarina Barley said, “We learned from the crimes of the NSU that we have to be much more alert than before. That goes for the security forces and the judiciary, but also for the whole of society.”

Interior Minister Horst Seehofer welcomed the arrests. “This is the realization of our principle, ‘zero tolerance towards right-wing radicals and far-right extremists’,” he told DPA news agency in Munich. “The threat of terrorism remains high in Germany, which means that we have to be prepared for an attack at any time.”

HOBART, Ind. (WLS) —

Police were investigating a shooting Sunday night in the parking lot of a Walmart store in Hobart in northwest Indiana.

At about 7:30 p.m., two people were shot, including a young person, police said. They were hospitalized, but police did not disclose their conditions.

Police were looking for a person of interest who was wearing a black sweatshirt and captured on store surveillance.

Worker Darrell Grigsby was outside when gunfire rang out.

“Everybody hit the ground. That’s when a lady said that a little boy got shot. It was like a war. They were shooting at each other,” Grigsby said.

The shooting started with an argument in the parking lot and several people ran into the store, causing panic. People hid in aisles and in a back warehouse until police gave an all-clear.

The Walmart Supercenter is located along the busy commercial district along U.S. Route 30.

The parking lot was blocked off late Sunday with multiple emergency vehicles in the area.

Germany Arrests 7 Men Suspected of Forming Far-Right Terrorism Ring – The New York Times

mikenova shared this story .

BERLIN — Seven Germans described by the authorities as belonging to the “hooligan, skinhead and neo-Nazi scenes” in eastern Germany have been arrested on suspicion of building a far-right terrorist organization called Revolution Chemnitz — named for the city that was rocked by recent street clashes — the country’s federal prosecutor said Monday.

Six men, all Germans aged 20 to 30, were arrested on Monday. They are suspected of acting under the leadership of the seventh man, who has been in police custody since Sept. 14, when the federal authorities opened their investigation, the prosecutor, Peter Frank, said in a statement. The group was at first seen only as a criminal organization, he said, but further evidence, including the intent to procure semiautomatic weapons, led investigators to suspect terrorism.

The arrests come just weeks after violence broke out in Chemnitz, where far-right extremists clashed with the police at demonstrations after a German man was fatally stabbed after trying to intervene in a dispute between two recent immigrants. A Syrian man remains in detention on suspicion of the killing.

It was not clear when the group began referring to itself as “Revolution Chemnitz,” or whether the men chose that name because of the unrest there.

On Sept. 14, the authorities said, five of the suspects took part in an attack on foreigners in Chemnitz. The authorities said that event appeared to have been a rehearsal for an action planned for Oct. 3, a national holiday celebrating the reunification of Germany.

Since the violence in Chemnitz began, the extent to which far-right extremist groups have been active in the country has been a point of dispute. The German government formally counts 83 people as having died in far-right violence since 1990, but an investigation by the news outlets Tagesspiegel and Zeit Online found that 169 people had been killed by neo-Nazis or other extremists.

It was not immediately clear if any of the men arrested were among those giving the stiff-armed Nazi salute or shouting anti-foreigner slogans in the demonstrations in Chemnitz, which led to a bitter dispute that nearly split Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government. After reports that far-right extremists had “hunted” foreigners during that unrest, Ms. Merkel denounced the violence, but Hans-Georg Maassen, head of country’s domestic intelligence agency, challenged the veracity of videos showing a skinhead chasing a dark-skinned man.

His comments raised questions over whether the agency, officially known as the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, was in a position to properly investigate far-right extremists, or had compromised its neutrality. Mr. Maassen was eventually forced to leave his post.

The federal prosecutor said that, after a search involving more than 100 police officers, the authorities believed that the six men detained on Monday “belonged to the hooligan, skinhead and neo-Nazi scene in the Chemnitz area and saw themselves as leaders within the far-right scene in Saxony,” a state in eastern Germany.

The authorities said the suspects’ extreme-right beliefs focused “on a ‘revolutionary’ goal of triumphing over the democratic rule of law” that included “violent and armed attacks against foreigners and those holding different political beliefs.” Among the potential targets were politicians and representatives of civil society, the prosecutor said.

BERLIN (AP) — German police have arrested seven men on suspicion of forming a “far-right terrorist organization” in the eastern city of Chemnitz and planning to carry out attacks against foreigners and political enemies, officials said Monday.

Six of the men, all German citizens aged between 20 and 30, were arrested Monday by tactical police units in Saxony, the state in which Chemnitz is located, and Bavaria, federal prosecutors said in a statement.

The men are alleged to have formed a group calling itself “Revolution Chemnitz,” together with a seventh suspect who was arrested in a separate case last month. The seventh man, identified only as 31 year-old German citizen Christian K. for privacy reasons, is alleged to have been the group’s leader.

Prosecutors said the men wanted to “carry out violent and armed attacks against foreigners and political enemies” as part of a plan to overthrow Germany’s democratic order.

Five of the men — Christian K. and four others identified only as Sten E., Martin H., Marcel W. and Sven W. — allegedly attacked several foreigners in the center of Chemnitz on Sept. 14, armed with bottles, weighted “sap” gloves and an electric stun device. Prosecutors said the attack was a ‘test run’ for another attack the men planned for Oct. 3, Germany’s national unity day.

Prosecutors didn’t specify whether the group was linked to anti-foreigner violence that erupted after a German man was killed in Chemnitz in August. A 23-year-old Syrian is being held on suspicion of manslaughter in that case. An Iraqi man is also being sought over the killing.

A kosher restaurant was also attacked on the sidelines of one protest, with masked men throwing stones and bottles and yelling “Jewish pig, get out of Germany.”

BERLIN, Oct 1 (Reuters) – German police detained six men on Monday suspected of forming a far-right militant organisation which assaulted foreigners in the eastern city of Chemnitz and planned attacks on politicians and civil servants, the federal prosecutor’s office said.

Some 100 policemen backed by special commando units detained the six suspects aged 28 to 30, acting on warrants issued by the Federal Court of Justice on Sept. 28, the prosecutor said.

The men are accused of forming “Revolution Chemnitz”, an organisation named after the city where the fatal stabbing of a German man blamed on migrants in August prompted the worst far-right violence in Germany in decades.

“Based on the information we have so far, the suspects belong to the hooligan, skinhead and neo-Nazi scene in the area of Chemnitz and considered themselves leading figures in the right-wing extremist scene in Saxony,” prosecutors said.

The group had planned to attack senior civil servants and politicians, they said. The men were arrested in the state of Saxony, where Chemnitz lies, and the southern region of Bavaria.

“In the course of further investigations we encountered tangible indications that the organisation pursued terrorist goals.”

The far-right violence in Chemnitz, where skinheads hounded migrants and performed the illegal Hitler salute in August, exposed deep divisions over Chancellor Angela Merkel’s decision in 2015 to welcome almost one million, mostly Muslim asylum seekers.

The events in the eastern city also strained Merkel’s coalition government.

Her conservatives and their Social Democrat (SPD) junior coalition partners could not agree what to do with the head of the BfV domestic spy agency, who questioned the authenticity of a video showing skinheads chasing migrants and was accused of harbouring far-right views.

The partners last month reached a compromise to transfer BfV chief Hans Georg Maassen to the interior ministry, ending a row that almost felled their six-month-old government.

A seventh suspect, believed to be the leader of the group, was detained on Sept. 14 on charges of threatening public peace.

The GBA did not say whether his arrest had led to uncovering the organisation and its other members.

Germany uncovers far-right terrorist group which attacked …

How European politicians could be corrupted – the mysterious “Habsburg group” and their lobbying for Ukraine

With the confession of Paul Manafort, President Trump’s former campaign manager, the American special prosecutor Robert Mueller has recorded his biggest success so far. Manafort has admitted what Mueller’s investigators uncovered in laborious, month-long work: a criminal construct of lobbying activities in the interests of the former Ukrainian government under the pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych, accompanied by money laundering and tax fraud. A total of $ 60 million flowed from Ukraine to Manafort, who unlawfully did not register as a lobbyist for a foreign government. Despite his confession, he is expected to remain behind bars for many years.

Gusenbauer, Prodi and Kwasniewski

Begleitet wurde Erdogan, wie ein offizielles Bildshows, only from his secret service chief and from Ahmet Davutoglu, the then foreign minister and later prime minister of Turkey. It is quite common in the US to refer to Turkey as part of Europe. However, there is no evidence that Davutoglu was the fourth “European leader” in the “Habsburg group”.

M.N.: It does not make any sense to stonewall and to obfuscate. It makes all the sense to work together. – 4:04 AM 10/1/2018 | FBI News Review

M.N.: There is some confusion and contradiction in the news reports: the earlier reports claimed or implied that the two Russians arrested in the Netherlands for hacking are Boshirov and Petrov, this report: “Two more Russians reportedly arrested for plotting a cyber hack connected to poisoning“, implies that these are different persons.

Where is the truth?

My respectful recommendation to Mr. Putin and the Russian Leaders is:

Do not fight these accusations (this whole incident and others) by claiming that it is a slander, we do not know yet where truth is.

Say this:

“The attacks on the Western Democracies and their citizens is the same like the attack on us and  our citizens, and we will do everything to help to solve these crimes if any were committed, and to bring the suspects to justice.”

Appoint the best detective, heading the best investigative team in the country (I am sure that there are some very good criminal detectives in Russia) to conduct this investigation on the Russian side with the pledge of the complete, full, in good faith cooperation with the British team. Let them work together and consult each other freely during this and the other, similar investigations.

It does not make any sense to stonewall and to obfuscate. It makes all the sense to work together. Generally, the hostile attitudes stemming from the insecurity have to stop.

These latest shows are complex but at the same time they are simple; they all seem to be from the same opera and from the same hypothetical source which I call the New Abwehr. This hypothesis has to be taken very seriously, the Russian people are very well familiar with these dangers. And now, just like then, you need the good allies. The same good old Allies.

And the New Abwehr does everything in its power, just like before, to break this Alliance.

Two more Russians reportedly arrested for plotting a cyber hack connected to poisoning
mikenova shared this story from New Zealand Herald – Top Stories.

A terrifying new twist has emerged in the Novichok poisonings in the UK, in which two Russian men allegedly attempted to murder a former KGB spy and his daughter with a deadly nerve agent, earlier this year.

The two Russian men, recently identified as Ruslan Boshirov and Alexander Petrov, had been in the cathedral city of Salisbury in March, allegedly to visit a famous clock, when the attacks occurred, leaving one woman dead and her partner in hospital, reports news.com.au.

Reports have now surfaced that, following the attacks, two other Russian spies were plotting to hack into the computer systems of Swiss Spiez Laboratory which was analysing the Novichok agent.

Swiss publication Tages Anzeiger and Dutch paper NRC have reported that the two men, who have yet to be identified, were arrested back in March and detained in The Hague before being extradited back to Russia.

This case is seriously complex, it involves many moving parts and players, and reads like something out of a spy novel.

We have two Russians, claiming to be innocent tourists in an English city, at the exact time that a former Russian spy and his daughter are attacked with a deadly nerve agent.

We also have another innocent couple, exposed to the same deadly nerve agent, one of which dies days later.

The deadly nerve agent effectively shuts down a city, with officials in hazmat suits casing the streets in search of the perpetrators.

And now, we hear of the arrest of a second pair of Russians, who had been plotting a cyber attack of the Spiez Laboratory computers. The Swiss lab was testing the deadly nerve agent at the time.

You just cannot make this stuff up.

In an attempt to clear their name, Ruslan Boshirov and Alexander Petrov gave a bizarre television interview with TV network Russia Today, claiming they were simply in the area to marvel at it’s many historical wonders.

“Our friends had been telling us for some time we should visit this wonderful town,” Petrov said.

After an awkward silence in the interview, Boshirov filled it by clarifying they had visited the Salisbury Cathedral, which is famous for its “123-metre spire and its clock, one of the first ever created in the world that’s still working”.

Even British Prime Minister Theresa May isn’t buying their story, slamming it as “blatant fabrications” this month.

The comments have prompted a backlash from Vladimir Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov, who claimed the Kremlin had remained “unambiguous, transparent and consistent” throughout the entire saga.

“It is unacceptable to associate the Russian leadership or government with what went on in Salisbury,

“More so to blame Russia of lies following a statement by two civilians. These men are ordinary citizens with no relation to government”.

It’s safe to say it has been a big week for British and Russian relations…

So, in the wake of the claims and counterclaims in this extraordinary case, let’s take a look at everything we know about the Novichok poisonings.
